Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church

History

Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church is a Roman Catholic church that was established in 1907. It was created primarily to serve the needs of newly arrived immigrants from Italy. The historic Church is listed on the New Jersey and national historic registries. The Church held its first mass on Sunday, September 8, 1907. During the Great Depression, the current Church was built by the parishioners.

The Archdioceses of Newark were forced to announce the closing of 10 catholic schools in the wake of the pandemic. The Archdioses promised to keep the Church intact for the foreseeable future.

The pandemic also meant that the church could no longer hold community events that brought in money. In 2018, the church was able to raise 28000 dollars through community-wide entertainment events. The Church also rented out its parking lot to the Mountainside hospital to make extra cash. In 2020, a tailgate party was held. And there were plans to hold events to honor parishioners in alternate years. The feast was affordable to the community

Coronavirus caused a huge crisis for the Church, with empty pews. Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church was merged with the Immaculate Conception Church and into a new parish St. Theresa of Calcutta, in 2016. The Church struggled with funding for repairs and upgrades. The falling roof and other renovation issues caused the Church to hold urgent fundraisers. Masses were also held every day to tackle the fund issues. Mount Carmel was also thought to remain unopened because of the Covid and the extensive repairs necessary to maintain the Church.
